Martini Mondays: Wedding Beauty Prep with Kate!

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from being around weddings nonstop, it’s this: wedding prep for your big day is so much more than booking glam a few weeks before it . On this episode of Martini Mondays, I sat down with Kate, founder of The Bridal Beauty Team, and honestly…she gave some of the best realistic bridal beauty advice I’ve heard in a long time.

And not the TikTok “drink water and everything will magically work out” kind of advice. Real advice. The kind that actually helps brides feel calm, prepared, and confident walking into wedding week.

Kate’s background is also incredibly interesting. She actually started in special effects makeup and hair for film before moving into finance and eventually finding her way back into beauty through freelance work and retail. That mix of creativity and business experience helped her build a full bridal beauty team here in Chicago — and it shows in how organized, knowledgeable, and thoughtful her approach is.

One of the biggest takeaways from our conversation? Brides need to start planning beauty much earlier than they think.

In a city like Chicago, bridal hair and makeup teams are booking out FAST. Kate shared that fall wedding dates — especially September and October — can book 10 to 18 months in advance. Yes…October 2027 dates are already filling. So if you have your venue and date locked in, your beauty team should absolutely be one of your next calls.

We also talked about the difference between long-term beauty prep and last-minute panic prep. Kate made such a good point that most beauty goals — healthier hair, glowing skin, improved texture, stronger scalp health — take time. A facial the week before your wedding isn’t going to magically transform your skin overnight. In fact, doing too much too close to the wedding can actually backfire.

For hair, Kate recommends incorporating scalp detoxes and clarifying washes into your routine. She also debunked the myth that fine hair should avoid moisture. A lot of brides overload their hair with volumizing products and forget that healthy, hydrated hair actually styles better and lasts longer.

For skincare, we discussed something SO many people misunderstand: hydration is not just about drinking water. Your skin also needs proper moisturizing with both water-based and oil-based products to stay balanced. Sometimes when you first start moisturizing correctly, your skin may feel oilier temporarily — but it’s often just adjusting.

Another huge topic? Bridal trials.

Kate recommends scheduling hair and makeup trials about 2–3 months before the wedding, once your inspiration and overall vision are more finalized. I loved hearing that her team gives brides extended trial appointments because it allows time to actually experiment with different looks instead of rushing through one option.

And can we talk about airbrush makeup for a second? Kate explained the differences between water-based, silicone-based, and hybrid formulas, which I found fascinating. Not every airbrush formula works for every climate or skin type. It’s not one-size-fits-all, and that’s why working with experienced artists matters so much.

We also got into spray tans because…ladies…please do a trial first.

Kate recommends scheduling your spray tan 3–4 days before the wedding to allow the color to settle properly and avoid transfer onto your dress. And PLEASE follow the aftercare instructions. Your spray tan artist is not giving you rules for fun.

One of my favorite pieces of advice she gave was booking a dermatologist appointment during wedding week — even if you don’t think you’ll need it. Think of it as your emergency backup plan if a breakout or irritation pops up unexpectedly.

We also discussed wedding morning prep, and honestly, these little details matter:

  • Show up with fully dry hair
  • Arrive with clean skin
  • Moisturize immediately after showering
  • Avoid heavy SPF under makeup to prevent flashback in photos

Simple things…that make a HUGE difference.

But beyond all the technical beauty advice, the biggest theme of this conversation was trust.

The energy of your beauty team truly sets the tone for your entire wedding morning. Kate talked about how important experience, professionalism, and calm energy are when hiring vendors. You’re not just hiring someone to curl your hair — you’re hiring people who are helping guide the atmosphere of one of the biggest mornings of your life.

As someone who works weddings constantly, I couldn’t agree more.

Your wedding morning should feel exciting, calm, fun, and taken care of. The right beauty team makes that happen.
